Nuts are an excellent source of protein, good fats, antioxidants and minerals to power and repair your body. A recent study highlighted the benefits of eating nuts for people suffering from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome effects 33% of the population in the UK and is a group of illnesses that relate to increased risk of diabetes, strokes, heart disease and obesity. Having fat around the middle of your body (an apple shape) is associated with metabolic syndrome (Alberti 2009).
Scientists from Spain found that eating nuts increased serotonin in obese subjects. Higher levels of serotonin reduces hunger cravings, increases nerve transmission, improves mood and supports heart health. The researchers even found consuming nuts reduced inflammation in the body.
